Basic Pocket Pool
TYPE OF GAME The
game of Basic Pocket Billiards is a combination of the call shot
aspects of 14.1 Continuous and the anything goes character of Fifteen
Ball. It's a game well-suited for mixed (beginners and accomplished
players) play, particularly in a team mode.
PLAYERS 2, or 2 teams.
BALLS USED Standard set of object balls 1-15, plus cue ball.
THE RACK Standard triangle rack; balls placed entirely at random.
OBJECT OF THE GAME To score eight balls before the opponent.
SCORING Any legally pocketed ball is scored as one ball.
OPENING BREAK Starting player must:
1. legally pocket any numbered ball into a target pocket, or 2.
cause the cue ball to contact any numbered ball and after contact,at
least one numbered ball must contact a cushion. Failure to do so is a
foul. Note: The cue ball does not have to strike a rail on the opening
break. Failure is a breaking violation; the opponent can accept the
table in position and shoot, or require that the balls be reracked and
the offending player repeat the opening break until the requirements
are satisfied. If a starting player pockets a ball on the opening
break, it is a legally pocketed ball if no foul or other violation is
committed, and continues at the table. On all subsequent shots,
however, the shooter must comply with all the Rules of Play below.
RULES OF PLAY 1.A
legally pocketed ball entitles the shooter to continue at the table
until failing to pocket a ball on a legal shot. The player may choose
and shoot any ball, but before shooting, must designate a single ball
that will be pocketed; the shooter need not indicate kisses, caroms,
combinations or cushions (all of which are legal).
2. On all shots subsequent to the opening break, the player must cause the cue ball to contact an object ball, and then:
(a) pocket an object ball, or; (b) cause an object ball or the cue ball to contact a cushion. Failure to do so is a foul.
3.
When a player has the cue ball in hand behind the head string andall
remaining object balls are behind the head string as well, the object
ball nearest the head string may be spotted on the foot spot upon
request. If two or more balls are an equal distance from the head
string, the player may designate which of the equidistant balls should
be spotted.
ILLEGALLY POCKETED BALLS All spotted, no penalty.
OBJECT BALLS JUMPED OFF THE TABLE All spotted. The stroke is a foul, and the penalty for fouls is followed.
CUE BALL AFTER JUMPING OFF THE TABLE OR SCRATCH All spotted. The stroke is a foul, and the penalty for fouls is followed.
PENALTY FOR FOULS One
scored ball is returned to the table (spotted) by fouling player for
each foul committed. If player who fouls has no previously pocketed
balls to spot up, he "owes" for such fouls, and must spot balls after
each scoring inning until his "owed" fouls are eliminated. After fouls
other than cue ball jump or cue ball scratch, the incoming player
accepts cue ball in position.
